A browser is a program that allows you to view text and images on the
Web. Currently, the two most popular browsers are
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. As the Internet has
become more popular among consumers, the fight for dominance between
these two companies has heated up. This battle for market share is popularly known as the Browser Wars.

"The real battle is for control of the desktop. Both companies want
their browsers to be the first
thing people see when they turn on their computers and to be their guide
to all applications."
Julia Angwin,
"New Browsers Have Big Ambitions",
SF Chronicle, April 8, 1997
