Netiquette, or "network etiquette," is the general rules of online communication and behavior. Based in common courtesy, netiquette says things like DON'T SHOUT, look before leaping (know the territory before posting messages), and generally respect others. Because online interaction lacks real-world clues like facial expressions, gestures, and inflections to add meaning to words, the chances of misunderstandings are higher. The guidelines offered by netiquette can help new users to avoid giving offence and to smoothly enter the cyber-community.

"When you're holding a conversation online -- whether it's an email exchange or a response to a discussion group posting -- it's easy to misinterpret your correspondent's meaning. And it's frighteningly easy to forget that your correspondent is a person with feelings more or less like your own."
